UPPER SECONDARY EDUCATION DROP-OUT RATE – THE CZECH AND ICELANDIC EDUCATION POLICY AND RESPECTIVE
RESULTS COMPARISON

This article reflects the current social phenomena of high secondary school drop-out rate in Iceland and the perceived inaccessibility of upper secondary education for a significant part of the population year of 9th grade elementary school pupils in the Czech Republic. It is based
on Eu strategic documents for the development of educational policies and compares upper secondary education in the Czech Republic with Iceland, i.e. a small, economically well-developed society, renowned for a high quality of life, measured by internationally comparable indicators. The result of the comparison is that the Icelandic secondary school system cannot be unequivocally labelled as better than the Czech one, as it shows a high dropout rate and thus a smaller share of the population with a fulfilled educational goal, i.e. upper secondary education attainment. The quality of the education system is a complex phenomenon, it can also be examined from the point of view of the difficulty of study requirements, the teacher´s qualification or the professional success of graduates, however, this comparative study focused only on one selected criterion of secondary school drop-out rate.
