GENDER IN PENSIONS – CHILDCARE IN THE PENSION SYSTEMS OF EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

A number of expert papers have revealed that one of the reasons for the gender pension gap comprises the interruption of the working career due to the birth and subsequent upbringing of children. The presented paper provides a summary of this issue and points to the factors that lead
to gender inequality in the amount of the pension, and provides an overview of the methods used to take into account childcare within the pension systems of selected European countries. The setting of the parameters of the pension system and the approach to, and extent of the consideration of periods of motherhood and raising children in the pension system, is one of a number of effective ways in which to  reduce  the
gender pension gap. Childcare remains primarily the responsibility of women, which is associated with more frequent interruptions to, or  reductions  in the length of the working career due to raising children for women than for men.
