MIGRATION IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC
- 1 Katedra demografie, Fakulta informatiky a statistiky, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze
Developed countries face the problem of ageing populations, often associated with population decline. This is caused by a decrease in the number of live births, but also by an increase in the number of people in the oldest age groups. The increasing proportion of people in the oldest age groups is placing demands on social and health systems and necessitating reform of pension systems. International migration is becoming a key factor for many countries to mitigate the effects of population ageing and natural population decline. Migrants are often economically active individuals. Migration policies are therefore key to maintaining demographic, social and economic stability. This article aims to evaluate the demographic development of the Czech Republic in the European context and to describe the possible benefits that foreign migration can bring with regard to the issues of population ageing and decline.
